NEW LONDON, Wis. — Outagamie County Sheriff’s Deputy Sue Bolwerk went well beyond the call of duty to save a local eight-year-old’s birthday celebration.
Joey Huey and her grandmother were on the way to school, cupcakes in hand. The pair had stayed up late the night before making the special treats for Joey’s classmates. Unfortunately, the cupcakes would never get to be enjoyed.
A car accident on the school ruined the cupcakes. Joey and her grandmother were fortunate to walk away without any injuries, but she was understandably upset about the fate of her cupcakes.
“My grandma helped me, but I mostly did most of the work. There were 16 of them, and I made some flowers on them and stuff, with M&Ms and some sprinkles, and some frosting,” Joey told Fox 11 News.
That’s when the responding officer, Deputy Sheriff Bolwerk stepped in.
“I thought, you know, she needs cupcakes on her birthday, so I ran down to Festival (Foods)…I think I grabbed about 30 of them — I wanted to make sure they had enough, and then brought them to the classroom.”
Joey and her grandmother were couldn’t have been more thankful for the kindness they were shown.
“She brought me some cupcakes, and I was really surprised,” Joey told her local Fox affiliate.
