IKEA, the world’s largest furniture company, recently released a 59-page Sustainability Report outlining progress toward its goal to be “People & Planet Positive”.
The figure grabbing headlines is that 60% of the material that IKEA sourced to produce its products in 2018 were “renewable”. This includes products such as cotton and bamboo. An additional 10% was sourced from recycled products.
Some other note-worthy stats and figures include:
- Increasing renewable energy – 18,240 solar panels installed on IKEA Industry production unit in Portugal – enough to power 2,700 homes
- The number of home solar customers grew and customers saved money on their energy bills.
- 100% of the cotton was certified as sustainable for a second year running, while the proportion stood at 85% for wood – up from 77% in 2017.
- Developing new innovative products such as the MISTELN – a water saving mist nozzle that can reduce water use by more than 90%
- Commitment to phase out single-use plastic products from the IKEA range by 2020
“We always think long term, innovating to ensure that our actions to meet people’s needs today do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs,” wrote Ikea’s Head of Sustainability Lena Pripp-Kovac .
“This requires us to rethink and inspire changes in lifestyles and consumption and to transform our way of working – from linear to circular, from consuming to regenerating resources.”
