Katie Vree never thought she’d return to the water.

The teenager went on a high school mission trip to Guatemala. It was there where she contracted a spinal virus. The sickness left Katie in a wheelchair.

“I was completely paralyzed from my collarbone down,” Vree told Inside Edition. “It took a lot of determination to become even slightly independent again.”

Katie’s condition has improved, but she still couldn’t see herself returning to the water.

Alex Moran stepped in to help. She runs an organization that helps people like Katie.

Katie rode a specialized chair with large skis. Finally, she was able to return to the water she loves.

“When she took off, I was overcome with emotion,” Moran said.

“I was just trying to soak in the moment. I was like, ‘Oh man, I can’t wait to do this again,'” Vree said.

Check out the video below to see the incredible moment Vree got back on her skis.
